Watering & Sprinkler Guide

For Healthier, Thicker, and Weed-Free Lawns

Proper watering is one of the most important parts of a successful lawn care program. Here’s how to get the most out of your weed control and fertilization treatments with The Augusta Turf Company.

💧 How Much to Water

  • April-October: 1 Inch per week if no rainfall

  • November–March: No regular irrigation is needed.

Apply the full amount in a single watering, not split up over multiple days. Deep, infrequent watering encourages stronger, deeper roots and a healthier lawn.

When to Water

We recommend watering on Mondays at 4:00 AM.

Why?

  • Monday: We don’t treat lawns on Sundays, so watering on Monday helps avoid washing away any product applied the previous week.

  • 4:00 AM: This is the best time culturally for turfgrass. It:

    • Mimics natural dew timing

    • Reduces water loss from evaporation

    • Lowers disease risk (compared to evening watering)

    • Gives water time to soak in before the sun comes up

Avoid watering in the evening—sitting water overnight can promote fungus and disease.

🧪 How to Measure 1 Inch of Water

Not sure how long to run your sprinklers? Try this simple test:

  1. Place 5–7 shallow containers (like tuna cans or rain gauges) around your yard.

  2. Run your sprinklers and track how long it takes for the containers to fill to 1 inch.

  3. Average the results and adjust your sprinkler run time accordingly.

For 1.5 inches in summer, multiply that time by 1.5.

Stick to this schedule, and you’ll maximize the effectiveness of your treatments—and see better results, faster.
